Don Tapas is the newest addition to a growing list of innovative businesses at The Falchi Building. This Spanish centric cafe will be a Monday-Friday operation focusing heavily on the lunch crowd. I chatted with owner, Berta Emilia Vivas, who opened Don Tapas with her fiancee, Diego Alejando Rivera, three weeks ago. Both have strong culinary backgrounds; Berta attended The French Culinary Institute, and Diego is currently a line cook at Casa Mono near Union Square. The couple- both born in Latin countries, (she Venezuela, he Colombia) chose tapas as an alternative to the saturated sandwich market. Customers can choose 2-3 tapas varieties allowing them to try something new each time and not be overly full in the middle of the day. They are also very excited about their “Ceviche Friday” menu which has been wildly popular. Pro Tip: Get there early as they have been selling out by noon!
When discussing their menu, Berta emphasizes quality. Most ingredients are sourced locally from Despana Foods-a Spanish market in Jackson Heights. Their bread is baked locally and brought in from Rollo Mio-a Maspeth bakery. Put simply, she says: “We love food and we love what we do.” I cannot wait to get in there and taste for myself. The phone call alone had me salivating.
