It’s Thursday which is almost Friday which seems like a great reason to attend a fun and worthy event hosted by Court Square small business, Square Wine & Spirits. Their annual  benefit for the Long Island City YMCA  begins tonight at 6:30. Tickets are available at the door for $50.

What exactly does $50 get you? Square Wine is making raising money for the Strong Kids Campaign  very enjoyable. Many of us had a YMCA in our respective hometowns and it thrills me to know we have a thriving outpost here in LIC. Like most non-profits, they rely heavily on donations and community support.

In addition to helping a noble cause, Square wine will host a wine tasting and silent auction, as well as cocktails provided by Queens Courage Gin.  But wait, there’s more. They are also inviting your furry friends along, too! Bring your dog in costume for a puppy parade—prizes will be awarded to the top three costumes. Finally, Square Wine will honor two women who are unequivocally heroes in LIC; Gianna Cerbone- Tieoli,  LIC advocate and owner of neighborhood fixture, Manducati’s Rustica, and Kate Wentzel—Manager of corporate responsibility at Jetblue Airways.

If you can’t attend, you can still make a difference. Buy your tickets to attend or make a donation here.

Long Island City is a special neighborhood. Along with (or in spite of) it’s recent “boom,” there is a long history rooted in New York City’s most diverse borough. Engaging small businesses who partner with like minded business owners and non-profits is an amazing way to maintain the unique culture that makes LIC so special.
