10 Things To Look Forward To at LIC Springs!

That’s right, that’s right—LIC Springs! is this weekend! And here are 10 things—among plenty of awesome—that you can look forward to checking out on Saturday.

1. The Center Line Gallery

Local artist William Garret will curate an outdoor art show for the event, featuring art by other local artists that focus on themes of movement, interactivity, and the kinetic energy (some of the works will be interactive). More:

“The artwork will include: Large metal sculptural elements from a new piece by world renowned sculptor Ilan Averbuch, a pedal powered neon piece from artist Kenny Greenberg, two moving figurative steel sculptures from Jack Howard-Potter, a sculptural bust made from plastic shopping bags by Beth Williams and two large scale phrase makers based on word refrigerator magnets by William Garrett. And by request, the return of Garrett’s interactive piece U B God.”

The art will be available from noon to 5 p.m. in the center of Vernon Blvd between 47th Ave and 47th Road.


2. Competitive Eating Contests at Manducatis Rustica

Both adults and kids can catch the competitive spirit while they fill their bellies with taste treats from Manducatis Rustica! First up is a spaghetti eating contest for kids at 3 p.m. and adults at 3:30 p.m., then a gelato eating contest for adults at 4 p.m. and kids at 4:30 p.m. Are you up for the challenge?


3. Circus Warehouse Acrobats

Come by and see acrobatic balancing demonstrations by the talented folks at Circus Warehouse, LIC’s very own circus arts training center.

4. Indoor Extreme Sports Zombie Archery Tag

The walking dead arrive in LIC this weekend, and you can up your zombie shooting skills thanks to Indoor Extreme Sports, the city’s only indoor paintball/reball center. There will be a zombie archery shoot, as well as an archery tag shooting range and peewee soccer shoot.


5. Sage Music Lessons

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to play an instrument? Well, your chance is here, thanks to the talented folks at Sage Music, who will offer free music lessons on Saturday!


6. LIC YMCA’s Family-Friendly Outdoor Workouts

Join the LIC YMCA as they provide a variety activities for the entire family. They’ll have an area for adults, teens, and youth, and will feature chances to partake in Zumba, yoga, bootcamp, kickboxing, and dance to get your body moving. There may also be some flash mob action—stop by to see what they come up with!

7. M. Wells Seafood Pop-Up

M. Wells is wheeling its oyster cart over to Vernon Blvd for LIC Springs! Hugue Dufour, owner of the restaurant, will be shucking our favorite bivalves at their raw bar. And be sure to keep a lookout for little ice packed jars of clams and seafood (they are apparently fun to knock back). A dream come true!!!

8. McManus Irish Dance at Woodbines

More great action in front of Woodbines includes lively traditional Irish dance and music for all ages. Enjoy performances and demonstrations for kids and adults—Jiggy Tots for toddlers and Celtic Cardio for adults. Don’t miss this incredibly creative way to get moving!


9. MoMA PS1 Mask Making from Yoko Ono’s Book, Grapefruit

Yoko Ono—famous for many things, including her own style of performance art—published her book, Grapefruit, in 1964. MoMA PS1 plans to do some mask making from that book, and they also hope to recreate performances and activities based on instructions in the book. Here’s an idea of what you might be in store for:

Ask people to put in wrinkles, dimples,
eyes, mouth, etc., as you go.

10. Socrates Sculpture Park’s Preview of DANCE AT SOCRATES

Dance companies 10 Hairy Legs and Lara Gemmiti & Kate Morales Dance Works will present a sneak peak of Socrates Sculpture Park’s “Dance at Socrates.” This is a month-long dance and choreography program that happens every August, where Socrates Sculpture Park partners with Norte Maar to present a month of free contemporary dance, right on the LIC waterfront. For LIC Springs! they will bring the spirit, innovation, and creativity of their emerging choreographers and dancers to Vernon Blvd. Dance and art lovers, this is not to be missed!
