Citi_BikeTwo pieces of great news for bike riders in Queens announced this week.

Citi Bike—the New York bicycle share program, is coming to Long Island City later this month—with redesigned bikes! This program that allows folks to pick up a bicycle and return to various docks around the city will add 1,400 bikes in Brooklyn and Long Island City.

Popular with tourists and residents alike, the bike seems like the best way to get around considering the inconsistency of trains and the endless traffic for cars. Rumors of LIC getting Citi bikes surfaces months ago, but AM New York confirmed their roll out to LIC this summer.

With the addition of more bikes, it is fitting that Councilman, Jimmy Van Bramer announced the unanimous vote to designate a protected  bike lane on Queens Boulevard. The stretch between Sunnyside and Forest Hills—a notoriously dangerous spot for drivers, pedestrians and bikers alike.

Streetsblog has the details including the plans to begin construction as early as July. In an increasingly populated borough, the addition of citi bikes and more lanes dedicated to cyclists, is indeed great news.

UPDATE! We just learned that the Department of Transportation will also designate and improve bike lanes on Vernon Blvd. from 30th Road to 46th Ave.
